2012 James A Reck handbuilt bass

We have a bass built by Iowa City violinmaker James Reck.  This bass has some interesting features, including a unusual outline and steep plate arching.  The maple used for the back and sides is highly flamed,  and both top and back plates use two piece, unblemished wood of really fine quality.  Nice golden brown oil varnish over a dark ground  accentuates the tool marks.

Some dimensions:

string length: 41 3/4″

lower bout width 26 3/4″

upper bout width 20 1/2″

rib depth lower block 8″

rib depth upper block 6 3/4″

length from bottom of bass to top of button 45 3/4″

This is a very responsive instrument with great projection,  for the professional player.
