Luciano Golia copy

July 26, 2017

Here’s a new  instrument based on a design from contemporary Italian maker Luciano Golia.  Mr. Golia is known for basses with a dark and powerful sound, often using poplar for both back and sides.  Built by the Calin Wultur Workshop in Reghin Romania,  this roundback bass also uses nicely figured European Black Poplar for the back and sides, paired with a medium  grain spruce top.

Some dimensions:

lower bout width 26 1/4″

upper bout width 19 1/4″

rib depth at lower block 8 3/4″

rib depth at upper block 6 1/4″

length of back from lower point to top of button 46″

string length 41 1/4″

The sound of this bass is round and dark, even across the range with nice projection. This would be a great instrument for an aspiring orchestral or solo player. The playing setup includes a Despiau bridge with our ebony wood adjusters and a New Harmony carbon endpin.
