The Double Bass Workshop Setup
Written by Henry Boehm

The Double Bass Workshop Setup
All the new basses we sell, whether laminate or carved are thoroughly set up by us. Our philosophy is that every bass that leaves the shop has an ultimate setup. There is nothing more irritating to us than outfits who sell new basses with poor or nonexistent setup. A good setup not only optimizes the sound and playability of the bass but is critical for proper technique. This is especially important for beginners and sadly enough it’s the student level instruments that often have the worst setups!

For the Laminates and Hybrids:
Fingerboard
: We begin the setup process by completely resurfacing the fingerboard. The bevel is removed if there is one. The finished board will be free of buzz spots and will have proper curvature and relief for comfort and playability.
Nut: The nut is adjusted for optimal string spacing and height.
Neck: The neck is thinned (if necessary) and is refinished for comfort and ease of playing.
Bridge: A new, quality French bridge is installed.
Bridge Height Adjusters: Our deluxe Double Bass Workshop bridge height adjusters are included as standard equipment on all the new basses we sell.
Endpin & Tailwire: Every new bass gets a new, quality German made 10mm cork lined endpin with the rubber thread on crutch tip. The tailwires are high strength wirerope and are neatly swaged. No clunky clamps or frayed wires to poke your fingers!
Soundpost: Quality soundposts are carefully fit for optimal sound and structural support.
Strings: we use Pirastro Obligatos as standard equipment on all our new basses. However, we will install any other set you wish and if that set cost more than the Obligatos, you only pay the difference in price! (some limitations apply)

For the Carved Basses:
Fingerboard: We begin the setup process by completely resurfacing the fingerboard.
Bridge: We install a new high quality French bridge, usually Despiau or Aubert.
Bridge Height Adjusters:
Our deluxe Double Bass Workshop bridge height adjusters are included as standard equipment on all the new basses we sell.
Endpin & Tailwire: Every new bass gets a new, deluxe German made 10mm cork lined endpin with the rubber thread on crutch tip.

In the end you can expect a bass with ultimate setup, sound and playability. Once you select an instrument, we will consult with you about strings and setup preferences. While we’re at it, we can discuss pickups, bows and other accessories, if applicable. In the end, you will have a bass that has been completely dialed in for your needs.
