The saying goes: “all great old basses were new once upon a time”. And this is so true. Basses sound better over time. There is still some mystery surrounding this phenomenon but it explains why in part older basses cost more than new basses. Basses also become more beautiful over time. The varnish colors intensify and deepen; a patina develops and over all the bass develops its own individual character. New basses tend to have a tighter, less even and deep of a tone than do older basses and this seems true no matter what level the instrument is. The varnish is new and shiny looking and often looks a bit homogenous. Unfortunately many of us don’t have the time or money to find a suitable old bass. Buying a new bass has its reward too. You get to nurture it and watch it grow and mature. You can rest easy knowing that your bass will only sound, look and feel better with time. And when it’s our time to check out, we can take comfort in knowing that we have lovingly nurtured a bass for other people to enjoy for years and years to come.
