Featuring a carved spruce top with laminated sides and back, Eastman makes this model in several configurations, and this is the violin cornered form. The bass has dark golden brown spirit varnish with a nicely profiled neck and thick ebony fingerboard.   Set up for comfortable arco playing and gets a good jazz sound as well. Set up with a Despiau adjustable bridge, Ullsperger 10mm endpin and Pirastro Evah Pirazzi weich string set.

This bass from Eastman has an interesting design that incorporates a carved spruce top,  carved figured maple back and laminated ribs. This approach is increasingly being used in fine instrument construction. It adds stability and stiffness to the ribs, and minimizes warping that can cause structural problems. Here’s another traditional German design by Michael Glass.   Well chosen wood was used with this bass, with even grained spruce and  flamed bookmatched maple for the round back, sides and neck. The dark golden brown spirit varnish is lightly antiqued and highly polished. Some dimensions: string length: 41 lower bout width 26″ upper bout width 18 3/4″ lower block rib depth 8″ upper block rib depth 6 3/4″ length of back 44″ With Bel Canto strings the sound has a sweet cello like character, and is even throughout the range. Another fully carved  instrument from the Rubner workshop. This has an antiqued red finish and looks great with a bit of  maple flame wood figure in the back and sides. A beautiful bass from the Rubner workshop in Saxony. The top is made from German spruce and the flat back, sides and neck  from flamed Bosnian maple.  The polished spirit varnish is a reddish golden brown with a bit of antiquing.  Gold Rubner French style tuners set off the flame in the neck and scroll. A fully carved roundback bass from Gewa’s German workshop. This one has some nice wood figure with plenty of Bearclaw in the top and nice flame in the back. Also with good looking reddish golden brown varnish with antiquing. Some dimensions: string length 41 3/8″ lower bout width 26 1/2″ upper bout width  19 1/2″ rib depth lower block 8 1/8″ rib depth upper block 7″ length of back 44 1/4″ We ended up opening this bass and thinning the top and back plates,  followed by a new bass bar.  Now there’s a bit  more low end, more projection overall,
