2020 Rubner Michael Glass #30
A beautiful bass from the Rubner workshop in Saxony. The top is made from German spruce and the flat back, sides and neck from flamed Bosnian maple. The polished spirit varnish is a reddish golden brown with a bit of antiquing. Gold Rubner French style tuners set off the flame in the neck and scroll. Some dimensions:
- String length 41 3/4″
- lower bout width 25 3/8″
- upper bout width 19 3/4″
- rib depth at the lower block 8 1/4″
- rib depth at the upper block 7 1/4″
- length of back 45 1/4″
This is not a small instrument, yet feels manageable and the neck is very well profiled. To facilitate access the top plate overhang on both sides is cut back to the rib outline near the upper block. The sound is big with both pizz. and arco. Plenty of low end here, but the bass projects over the entire range – a very nice instrument.
Set up with Bel Canto strings, an adjustable Despiau bridge and a New Harmony carbon endpin.
