2020 Rubner Michael Glass #20 bass

May 28, 2021

Here’s another traditional German design by Michael Glass.   Very well chosen wood was used with this bass, with even grained spruce and  flamed bookmatched maple for the round back, sides and neck. The dark golden brown spirit varnish is lightly antiqued and highly polished.

Some dimensions:

string length: 41 3/16″

lower bout width 26″

upper bout width 18 3/4″

lower block rib depth 8″

upper block rib depth 6 3/4″

length of back 44″

With Bel Canto strings the sound has a sweet cello like character, and is even throughout the range. Set up with an adjustable bridge, beautiful French style tuners and a New Harmony carbon endpin.

2020 Johannes Rubner #66 Poplar

08 May
May 8, 2021

Here’s a beautiful new bass from the Rubner workshop in Markneukirchen.  The top comes from even grained bookmatched spruce and the back and sides are made from Lombardy poplar. The poplar grain is very straight and clear, and with no “wings” added to the edges of the back plate this must have come from a very large old tree. The varnish is light golden brown with a ground that sets off the poplar flecking nicely.

Some dimensions:

String length 41 3/16″

rib depth at lower block 8″

rib depth at upper block 6 5/8″

lower bout width 25 3/4″

upper bout width 19 5/8″

length of back 43 3/4″

This is an impressive sounding instrument with a large and even sound across the range.  The character of the poplar plus the rib depth ensure that the low end is  present, but the attack is still articulate. The Flexocore Deluxe strings add a silvery edge to the sound, but the Bel Canto strings installed now sounds great as well.   This bass is fun to play,  has a quick arco response and would be right at home in the orchestra section.

Set up with Thomastik Bel Canto strings, adjustable bridge and a New Harmony endpin.

2019 Rubner “Walther” bass

27 Apr
April 27, 2021

We have a another fully carved roundback bass from the Rubner workshop. This has the antiqued golden brown “Berlin” finish and looks great with some nice flame in the back and sides. Some dimensions:

lower bout width 26 1/4″

upper bout width 19 1/4″

rib depth at lower block 7 15/16″

rib depth at upper block 7″

length of back 44 1/2″

string length 41 1/4″

This one is particular good  with a punchy pizz. sound and nice projection with the bow. This one is very light in weight as well, and the neck profile has a nice feel. The bass arrived with a saddle crack in top, but that has been well repaired by our shop.  Set up with New Harmony carbon endpin, Teller bridge and Pirastro Evah Pirazzi weich strings.

$6500 with cover.

2020 Rubner Michael Glass #30

12 Jan
January 12, 2021

We have another Michael Glass #30 model from the Rubner workshop in Saxony. The top is made from German spruce and the flat back, sides and neck  from flamed Bosnian maple.  The polished spirit varnish is a reddish golden brown with a bit of antiquing.  Gold Rubner French style tuners set off the flame in the neck and scroll. Some dimensions:

String length 41 3/4″

lower bout width 25 3/8″

upper bout width 19 3/4″

rib depth at the lower block 8 1/4″

rib depth at the upper block 7 1/4″

length of back 45 1/4″

This is not a small instrument yet feels manageable, and to facilitate access the top plate overhang is cut back to the rib outline at the upper block.  The sound is big with both pizz. and arco.  Plenty of low end here and the  bass projects over the entire range.  Strung with Pirastro Flexocore Deluxe now for a little more bright edge to the sound.

Set up with an adjustable  Despiau bridge and a New Harmony carbon endpin.

$8500 with cover.

New Gewa Walther 5/8 bass

05 Sep
September 5, 2020

A nice new bass from the German Rubner workshop made with European Spruce and maple. The finish is a reddish brown spirit varnish with factory antiquing.

Some dimensions:

string length 40 1/8″

upper bout width 19 3/8″

lower bout width 26 1/4″

rib depth tapers from 7 3/8″ to 6 5/8″

length of back 42 5/8″

The size of this instrument would appeal not only to players looking for an instrument a bit smaller than a typical 3/4,  but might also work as a solo bass or “pit bass”.  The projection is impressive for a smaller instrument and the arco response is quick.

Set up with an Aubert bridge, New Harmony carbon endpin and D’addario kaplan strings.

October 30, 2019

We have another new Mirecourt model from Shen.  This is a fully carved 3/4 size bass with an outline inspired by French pear shaped basses.  The wide lower bout width is contrasted with sloping shoulders to give the bass a big sound combined with great access to the upper register.
