G.A. Pfretzschner Bass

August 12, 2019

We have for sale a nice German “workshop” type bass with a G. A. Pfretzschner Markneukirchen  stamp.  My understanding is this was likely made between 1900 and 1935.  This fully carved roundback gamba shaped instrument is in very good condition with a few repaired top and rib cracks.  The golden brown spirit varnish is in great shape.

Some dimensions:

string length 42 1/2″

lower bout width 25 1/2″

upper bout width 19 3/4″

lower block rib depth 7 15/16″

upper block rib depth 6″

length of back 44 1/2″

The string length on this puts it into a 7/8 size, with an E flat neck. Nice sounding bass for the orchestra bass section or jazz.  Ullsperger enpin and adjustable French bridge installed, and comes with Tuxedo brand bag, basic Brazilwood bow and Ingles stand.
